Switchable Adhesion Surfaces with Enhanced Performance Against Rough Counterfaces
In a recent study, we demonstrated that the pressurization of micro-fluidic features introduced in the subsurface of a soft polymer can be used to actively modify the magnitude of the adhesion to a harder counterface by changing its waviness or long wavelength undulations. In that case, both contacting surfaces had very smooth finishes with root-mean-square roughnesses of less than 20 nm. These...
متن کاملSwitchable Split-ring Frequency Selective Surfaces
Abstract—Tunable frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) based on split ring resonators (SRRs) are presented. Tuning performance is achieved by means of several on/off switches placed between the rings of each SRR element. The band-stop FSS response is dynamically tuned to different frequency bands at different switching states. In addition, loadings placed at the corners of outer ring elements, fo...
متن کاملReversibly switchable DNA nanocompartment on surfaces.
Biological macromolecules have been used to fabricate many nanostructures, biodevices and biomimetics because of their physical and chemical properties. But dynamic nanostructure and biomachinery that depend on collective behavior of biomolecules have not been demonstrated. Here, we report the design of DNA nanocompartments on surfaces that exhibit reversible changes in molecular mechanical pro...
متن کاملY-Shaped Polymer Brushes: Nanoscale Switchable Surfaces
We report a first observation of nanoscale surface structures of segregated pinned micelles of grafted Y-shaped molecules and their reversible structural reorganization. We designed a novel type of Y-shaped molecules combining two highly incompatible polymer chains (arms) attached to a single focal point capable of chemical grafting to a functionalized silicon surface. We demonstrated that spat...
متن کاملFemtosecond laser induced hierarchical ZnO superhydrophobic surfaces with switchable wettability.
A simple and one-step method to form a rough ZnO layer consisting of micro/nanoscale hierarchical structures via direct femtosecond laser ablation of the Zn surface is reported for the first time. The resultant surfaces show switchable wettability between superhydrophobicity and quasi-superhydrophilicity via alternate UV irradiation and dark storage.
